Overview

Varkala stands completely unique along the vast Kerala coastline—it is the only beach in the state where striking red laterite cliffs rise dramatically adjacent to the Arabian Sea. The cliff-top is lined with a bohemian strip of surf schools, yoga ashrams, and lively cafes overlooking the sweeping ocean panoramas. Below the cliffs, the Papanasam Beach holds immense religious significance, believed to wash away sins. It seamlessly blends backpacker culture with deep-rooted Hindu pilgrim traditions centered around the ancient Janardana Swami Temple.
