Overview

Hampi is an otherworldly landscape of giant rust-colored boulders punctuated by the breathtaking, intricate ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara Empire. Now an expansive UNESCO World Heritage site, it stretches along the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka. Walking through Hampi is stepping back in time; the towering Virupaksha Temple, the legendary stone chariot at the Vittala Temple, and the royal enclosures speak volumes of an era when this was one of the wealthiest cities in the global medieval world.

Best Time to Visit

October to March. The extreme summer heat radiating off the boulders makes exploration highly exhausting between April and July.

How to Reach

  • By Air: Hubli Airport (160 km) or Jindal Vijaynagar Airport in Bellary (40 km).
  • By Train: Hospet Junction is the gateway railway station, just 13 kilometers from the ruins.
  • By Road: Well-connected by overnight sleeper buses directly from Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
